When you bought your computer, you checked its specifications. You probably checked the normal attributes like how big the hard drive was, how much RAM it had, and the speed of the processor. That is all good information to know, but if you want to properly maintain your computer, it would be a good idea to learn more about your system, hardware and software included.
Microsoft System Information gives you details about your system. To open System Information, you can either click the Start button, select All Programs, select Accessories, select System Tools, and finally System Information, or you could click the Start button and type in System Information in the bottom search box and select System Information. Once the program is opened, the System Summary will be displayed. This gives an overview, including information about your operating system and major computer components.
On the left, you will see three categories: Hardware Resources, Components, and Software Environment. Hardware Resources contains information on the hardware that is installed on your computer. This is fairly technical information, and you probably wont need this much with normal computer maintenance.
The Components category contains information about all of the hardware and ports installed in your computer. It also displays information about any external hardware you have installed on your system, such as printers.
The Software Environment category gives specific information about what programs are running and what settings are being used in Windows. It contains information about things such as device drivers that run hardware, your network, programs that start up when you boot Windows, and error reports generated by Windows. There is a lot of useful information contained here; it shows much about the current state of Windows and and the services and programs that are running.
